Earl Cheng also holds a position as an attending physician in pediatric urology at Children’s Memorial Hospital. His laboratory’s efforts are directed in basic science and translational research. His main funded projects involve the delivery of growth factors from self-assembling nanofibers to bladder smooth muscle and urothelium. He also studies the role of bone marrow-derived stem cells in bladder regeneration and ureteral tissue as an alternate cell source for smooth muscle.  These and a number of other projects are underway to apply advances in materials science and stem cell technology to disease states in urologic tissues.
