Lonnie Shea focuses his research on the use and development of systems that promote tissue development and regeneration through direct cellular processes. Biomaterial design and development is combined with drug delivery technology to create three-dimensional culture environments that regulate cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions, and to provide a controlled release of protein and DNA. Along with the experimental systems, mathematical models and 
computer simulations of DNA delivery and tissue formation are developed, which can be utilized for a variety of applications.
