C. Shad Thaxton focuses on translating state of the art nanotechnologies into clinical use and fabricating the next generation of nanostructures for use as therapeutic, imaging, and diagnostic agents. Specifically, nanoparticle-enhanced ultrasensitive PSA serum measurement in patients who have undergone prostate cancer treatment may provide the most accurate and timely information regarding disease cure or cancer recurrence.  In the latter case, disease recurrence can be treated early with the anticipation of improved outcomes. With regard to fabrication, he uses inorganic nanostructures to exquisitely control the size, shape, and surface chemistry of bio-nanomaterials, which will ultimately serve as a diverse set of agents for treating and imaging a wide range of diseases state including atherosclerosis and cancer.
