Research Technologist II
Northwestern University (Evanston campus) is seeking a highly motivated individual for the position of Research Technologist II. This individual would be the dedicated operator of a high-speed cell sorter (40% time commitment) and would provide training and oversee usage of a three laser flow cytometer (20%). The facility is in its incipient stages, and the Research Technologist would help launch the center. It will be important for this person to be able to promote the center to increase the number of investigator users. This individual would also be responsible for running the day-to-day activities of a tissue engineering and biotechnology laboratory (40%), including placing general lab orders, maintaining standard laboratory equipment, and performing biological assays.
Principle accountabilities:
Flow cytometry center: performing all cell sorts, daily quality control and normal maintenance procedures, trouble-shooting as necessary, training users for flow cytometer, tracking investigator usage, providing guidance in experimental design to investigators. Tissue-engineering laboratory: maintaining standard laboratory equipment such as incubators, freeze-dryers and fluorescence microscopes; maintaining laboratory general lab supplies, including placing orders and laboratory organization; and performing biological assays and other related duties as required or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
At least one year of cell sorting experience (2 or more is ideal) and ability to run cell sorter independently after initial training. Must understand flow cytometry and cell sorting principles (i.e, compensation), have working knowledge of FACSDiva software, be able to troubleshoot instruments, handle multiple cell sorting and flow cytometry applications, and provide guidance to investigators with regards to experimental design and data interpretation/analysis. A bachelor's of science in biological, biochemical sciences or chemical sciences with significant experience in biological assays; at least 2 years of experience as a research technician or managing a lab with relevant experience; and hands on experience with standard biology assays, histology, immunohistochemistry and cell culture are required. Strong communication skills and ability to work well with others are a must.
