Oliver elected into the Latin American Academy of Sciences

SQI faculty member Guillermo Oliver has been elected as a member of the Latin American Academy of Sciences. Among other discoveries, Oliver is known for pioneering research on the lymphatic system, a vascular network that was virtually ignored by researchers until this century.

The tools and findings generated in his laboratory set the stage for recent discoveries of novel functions and diverse origins of lymphatic vessels that have drastically changed the scientific community’s understanding of the lymphatic vasculature. Traditionally regarded as passive conduits for fluid and immune cells, lymphatic vessels now emerge as active, tissue-specific players in major physiological and pathophysiological processes including obesity and metabolism, cardiovascular diseases, neurological disorders, glaucoma, inflammatory processes and cancer.

A native of Uruguay, Oliver is the Thomas D. Spies Professor of Lymphatic Metabolism and the director of the Center for Vascular and Developmental Biology at the Feinberg Cardiovascular and Renal Research Institute.
